Planning Your Design

The function of a design is a solution to a specific problem. It is why the design exists, its purpose. For example, the function of a chair is to support a seated individual. But most successful design solutions serve multiple purposes. A chair is also meant to be comfortable, visually appealing, and to match the style of other pieces of furniture in the room. In this way, good designs become multifunctional, acting as solutions to more than one problem.

It is commonly said in design conversation that form follows function. This means that the form of a web design, or its outward appearance, should be created in service to its function. The function of a design should define its form. But this is not to say that the form of a design should be assigned less importance than its function. In a good design, each is essential to the overall success of your website and should be given equal attention. The statement “form follows function” simply indicates the linear progression of the design process. The function of a design needs to be established first, so that the form can then be fully considered.

So first let’s look at the function.

Who is your intended primary audience? Current customers, or future customers?

What is the branding message or mission statement of your business that you want to communicate with your website?

What is the personality of your business? Contemporary, conservative, somewhere in the middle. Be true to who your business is, not your
desired style. False advertisement isn’t a good way to draw people in.

What are some of the key products and/or services that you want to highlight?

Once you define some of your functional needs, it is important to give consideration to the form of your website.

It is said that you have 2.5 seconds to draw someone in visually or for them to lose interest. This means that you should take careful
consideration to your color scheme, textures and gradients, emphasis given to elements, and layout to name a few. Presentation is crucial.

Photos add personality to your website and give the visitor to your site a feeling of what it would be like to visit your business and/or
purchase your product or service. This helps to break down some preconceptions and eliminate some concerns they may have.

Is your menu bar easy to decipher? Can I find what I need to know with a quick glance?

Is the information presented in a simple clean format? Not too wordy or visually distracting.

These are just a few things to consider when you are creating your DIY website or gathering information to provide to Cast Your Net Online for creation purposes.
